In Office Surgery Q & A
What is an endometrial ablation?
If you suffer from excessive menstrual bleeding and have completed your childbearing years, you may be a candidate for endometrial ablation. During the short in-office procedure, your doctor removes your uterine lining.
There are several methods your gynecologist uses to do an endometrial ablation:
- Balloon therapy
- Electrocautery
- Radiofrequency ablation
- Hydrothermal
Some endometrial ablation procedures are conducted with a lighted wand called a hysteroscope, while others use ultrasound technology. After the procedure, your menstrual flow is significantly reduced and may cease altogether.
What is a hysteroscopy?
The team of doctors at Arbor Obstetrics & Gynecology relies on hysteroscopy to assist in the diagnosis and treatment of gynecological problems. The tiny hysteroscope passes through your vagina and cervix into your uterus to help paint a clearer picture about your:
- Heavy periods
- Miscarriage(s)
- Post-menopausal bleeding
- Uterine fibroids
- Cramping
- Pain
Also, in the rare event that your intrauterine device (IUD) dislodges or becomes displaced, a hysteroscopy is the go-to solution.
When is a LEEP procedure necessary?
If your Pap smear is abnormal, you’ll receive a follow-up evaluation with a procedure called a colposcopy. During the colposcopy exam, your doctor uses a magnifying instrument to look closer at your cervix, vulva, and vagina for certain conditions and diseases, such as genital warts, inflammation, cervical dysplasia, or precancerous changes.
If your doctor sees advanced cervical dysplasia, she’ll recommend a LEEP, or LOOP Electrosurgical Excision Procedure. The minimally invasive, in-office procedure uses a heated wire loop to remove abnormal cells from your cervix, making it possible for healthy tissue to regenerate in their place.
Why would I need a D&C?
Dilation and curettage (D&C) is a minor procedure to remove tissue from the lining of your uterus that’s performed right in the office. Common reasons for a D&C are to:
- Clear the uterus after a miscarriage or abortion
- Control heavy bleeding
- Determine causes of bleeding after menopause
D&Cs are often combined with a hysteroscopy procedure.
