Contraception Q & A

Why use contraception?

Beyond keeping you from getting pregnant, there are other benefits to using contraception. These include:

  • Help with periods
  • STD prevention
  • Hormone control

It’s important to prioritize your goals when choosing a birth control method since each has its own array of benefits and drawbacks. Some do not use hormones, for example, and thus should not be used to attempt to control your hormone levels.

What are the most effective methods?

Arbor Obstetrics & Gynecology offers many of the most trusted contraceptives. Talk to your doctor to decide which of the following methods would work best for your goals and preferences.

Oral Contraceptives

Oral contraceptives, more commonly known as “the pill,” contain hormones to stop ovulation. They are highly effective when used correctly and consistently, but you need to remember to take them every day. Oral contraceptives do not prevent STDs, but they’re good for people who successfully keep to strict schedules.

Intrauterine Device (IUD)

IUDs are some of the most effective and low-maintenance birth control options on the market. Some IUDs secrete a hormone called progestin in order to prevent pregnancy while others are made of copper, which acts as a spermicide. These devices remain in your body for years, and you don’t have to remember to take a pill or change a patch.

Nexplanon

Nexplanon is a brand of hormonal birth control implant that gets inserted under the skin of your arm. The device is small, and it lasts for up to five years. Like the IUD, Nexplanon is highly effective and doesn’t require attention or maintenance beyond its insertion and removal.

NuvaRing

NuvaRing is a brand of hormonal birth control that comes in the form of a small ring. The ring is inserted into your vagina and needs to be changed each month. While it requires more maintenance than an IUD, the NuvaRing is almost as effective and much easier to stop using if you decide that you want to get pregnant.

How soon can I get pregnant after stopping the pill?

If you decide that you want to get pregnant and are taking the pill as birth control, you can conceive as soon as you begin to ovulate again. It should occur roughly two weeks after you stop taking birth control.

If you’re considering a change in birth control or if you’re a first-timer, the doctors at Arbor Obstetrics & Gynecology in Atlanta are ready to help you explore your options and find the best fit. Call or schedule an appointment online today.
